So…I did it. A juice fast. Nothing but juice for 10 whole days. And let me tell you something.
Way harder than I thought it would be. (SERIOUS PROPS to those who go longer than 10 days!!) I was SURE that by Day 5 or 6, I would be used to it and rolling right along. And that happened…kinda.
Day 5 went well and I was in a good groove juicing and there weren’t really any cravings or crazy appetites. Just felt really alert and on point. I even survived traveling over 5 hours with the Littles and Mama LiLi to San Antonio without cracking. I packed my juicer and some pre-made juices and wasn’t uncomfortable– even when the whole family went out to eat at one of my favorite Mexican restaurants.
And then Day 6 hit and for some reason so did the cravings. I was hungry and starting to get annoyed at juicing. It didn’t help that my BIL grilled out and made a TON of meat and a giant vat of homemade mac and cheese. Did I mention the garlic cheese bread? I was like Phil on the 4th of July in Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. I did a lot of sniffing of plates that night my friends. A LOT of smelling. But I persevered. I stuck to my juice and am happy to say I didn’t break once.
The hardest day for me was Day 10 itself. Being so close to being done and yet so far. I joked with J that I was going to stay up until midnight and gorge on black beans. (I was CRAVING black beans those last few days I was fasting. Weird, I know.) But I didn’t. We decided to kill time that last night by going grocery shopping, which wasn’t as torturous as it sounds because I knew we could CHEW ALL THE FOOD in a matter of hours. We prepped a bunch of stuff when we got home and I even made a pot of black beans (DUH) and some wild rice.
J and I ended the night by making a really long and awkward wrap-it-up video– which you can find HERE if you are so inclined. You will learn both our real names if you do! ::GASP::
All in all, it was a rewarding experience to challenge myself and see if I could do this. Would I do it again? Um…right now I would say probably not– at least not for 10 days straight juicing but I’m not that far removed from this experience yet to make a good decision. Ask me in a couple of months. It will be like having kids. After a while you forget all the crazy beginning tortuous times and only remember the fun parts. This is natures way of getting you to repeat your mistakes, I mean have more kids.
